Background and Aims: Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) plays a crucial role in reducing substance use. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention based on the Roy Adaptation Model in improving the quality of life of patients undergoing MMT.
Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pre/test-post/test design and two groups of intervention and control in Tabas, Iran, during 2025. A total of 80 eligible patients were selected via convenience sampling, and after obtaining informed consent, were non-randomly allocated into intervention (n=40) and control (n=40) groups. The intervention group participated in eight weekly educational sessions based on the Roy Adaptation Model, while the control group received routine care. Data were collected using a Quality-of-Life questionnaire. He obtained data were then analyzed using SPSS software (version 26) via Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA), controlling for baseline scores.
Results: According to the chi-square test results, no statistically significant differences between were observed between the intervention and control groups regarding educational level, marital status, employment status, frequency of substance use, and method of substance use (P>0.05). Findings also showed that after controlling for baseline scores, the mean score of overall Quality of Life (P<0.001) and the mental health dimension (P<0.001) were significantly higher in the intervention group, compared to the control group.
Conclusion: Education based on the Roy Adaptation Model is associated with an improvement in overall Quality of Life, particularly the mental health dimension, among patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment.
