Instruction for Authors
Aims and Scope:
Journal of Birjand University of Medical Sciences (JBUMS) is a quarterly publish Open Access Persian-English language, free of charge, peer-reviewed journal dealing with wide range of Medical scientific topics, since 1993.
Journal of Birjand University of Medical Sciences aims to publish the highest quality material, both clinical and scientific, on all aspects of Medical Sciences. It includes articles related to research findings, technical evaluations, and reviews. In addition, it provides a forum for the exchange of information on all aspects of Medical Sciences, including education issues, too.
 
Articles Categories:
 Journal of Birjand University of Medical Sciences accepts the following categories of articles:
 
A- Original articles, are scientific report of the original research studies. These articles consist of Abstract (Persian & English), Introduction, Materials & Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgement and References. It`s format is structured abstract up to 250 words and the references not exceed than 30.
B- Review articles, involve the overall study of a new scientific topic. Review articles would be approved of for publication if submitted by qualified experts with research experiences and Excellences in the relevant field. The corresponding author of the review article must be one of the authors of at least three articles appearing in the references and Their H-Index should be above 10. The number of references should not be less than 30. These articles consist of: Abstract (does not need to be structured), Introduction, Methods (this section consists of the access methods to all of related references and number of each kind such as book, journal, web page etc.), Discussion, Conclusion and References.
 
C- Case reports, are published only if the report is of exceptional interest and should present a novel and rare case. These articles consist of: Abstract (does not needed to be structured), Introduction, Case Presentation, Discussion and References. Necessary documentation of the case like 1-4 figures, pathology report, laboratory test report and imaging should be included in the submission package.
 
D- Short Communication, describe significant developments of ongoing research in the field of ageing and contain less scientific data than the original articles. These articles should include Abstract (does not needed to be structured), Introduction, Methods, Discussion and References. Its include less than 4 figures and tables and the references not exceed than 20.
 
E- Letters to Editor, is comments from our readers on recently published articles. It`s format is 3-4 printed pages without any table and figure, abstract with 150 words and the references not exceed than 10.
 
Submission:
The manuscript must be submitted only via electronic submission and accompanied by a cover­ing let­ter to the Editor-in -Chief that signed and dated by corresponding author including title and au­thor(s) name and undertaking that it has not been pub­lished or submitted elsewhere. In case the manuscript was earlier submitted to some other Journal and was rejected, the authors must provide full information for proper analysis. The text should be submitted in Microsoft Word format as an attachment. Manuscript should be typed in a B-Lottus font size of at least 12 points and double space of lines with clear margins of at least 2/5 cm on both sides. Tables as well as illustrations should be typed and drawn on a separate paper. Do not upload pictures and tables in word file as scan, copy or photographs of them. The figures should be sent in a format of JPEG or GIF which will produce high quality images in the online edition of the journal.
 
Preparation of manuscripts:
The papers should be set based on the following pattern. Please note that the pages or sections that are listed in following pattern, should be in one file, not in some separate files.
1- Title page:  The complete title of the manuscript, the name of all the authors with their highest qualifications, the department or institution with which they cooperate, address for correspondence with telephone numbers, e-mail, and Fax number.
2- Abstract: All original articles must accompany a structured abstract up to 250 words. It should be structured as Background and Aim, Materials & Methods, Results and Conclusion followed by 3 to 5 Key words. Key words will assist indexers in cross indexing the article as they are published with the abstract. Use terms from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) list of index medicus (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html). Authors need to be careful that the abstract reflects the content of the article accurately.
3- Introduction: This should summarize the purpose and the rationale for the study. It should neither review the subject extensively nor should it have data or conclusion of the study. 
4- Materials & Methods: This should include the exact method or observation or experiment. If an apparatus is used, its manufacturer’s name and address should be given in parentheses. If the method is established, give reference but if the method is new, give enough information so that another author would be able to perform it. If a drug is used, its generic name, dose and route of administration must be given. For patient’s age, sex with mean age ± standard deviation must be given. Statistical method must be mentioned and any general computer program(s) used must be specified. The Info system used should be clearly mentioned.
5- Results: It must be presented in the form of a text, tables and illustrations. The contents of the tables should not be all repeated in the text. Instead, a reference to the table number may be given. Long articles may need subheadings within some sections (especially the Results and Discussion parts) to clarify their contents.
6- Discussion: This should emphasize the present findings and the variations or similarities with other works done in the field by other professionals. The detailed data should not be repeated in the discussion again. Emphasize the new and important aspects of the study and the conclusions that follow. It must be mentioned whether the hypothesis mentioned in the article is true, false or no conclusions can be derived.
7- Conclusion: It should include the final outcome of the research.
8- Acknowledgement: All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be covered in the acknowledgement section. It should include persons who provided technical help, writing assistance and departmental head who only provided general support. Financial and material support should also be acknowledged.
9- Tables: These should be submitted in limited numbers with the captions placed above. Do not submit tables as photograph. Place explanatory materials in footnotes, not in the heading.
 
10- Figures: Should be in limited numbers, with high quality art work and mounted on separate pages. The captions should be placed below. The same data should not be presented in tables, figures and text, simultaneously.
 
11- References: All manuscripts should be accompanied by relevant references. The author should ensure reference to locally published studies by doing proper literature search. It may not be possible for the editor and reviewers to check the accuracy of all reference citations. To minimize such errors the author should verify references against the original documents. References should provide the following information as stated in the presented models as follows:
A- Article: Surname and initials of authors (in the case of seven or more authors, the names of the first six authors followed by et al should be listed), title of paper, running title of journal [should be abbreviated in accordance with Index Medicus (see list printed annually in the January issue of Index Medicus) and if a journal is not listed in Index Medicus then its name should be written out in full]. Publication year; Volume (issue number): related pages.

A: The number of references for different articles is as follows:

  • - Original Research Article: maximum 30 references

  • - Short article: maximum 15 references

  • - Types of letters to the editor: maximum 10 references

B- Refrain from citing sources that are dissertations and sources related to conferences and congresses. Also, a maximum of one book is accepted as a reference.
C- DOI link or reference page hyperlink should be included.
D- The year of publication of the references should be related to the last 5 years.
E- Do not include the site as a reference, except for specific sites such as WHO, CDC, etc.


Example:
Gill IS, Higginson LA, Maharajh GS, Keon WJ. Early and follow-up angiography in minimally invasive coronary bypass without mechanical stabilization. Ann Thorac Surg. 2000; 69(6): 56-60.
 
B- A Chapter in a book:  Surnames and initials of section authors, chapter title, surnames and initials of book authors, book title, publication sequence, city of publication, publisher, publication year, related pages.
 Example:
Philips SJ, Whisnant. Hypertention and Stroke. In: Laragh JH, Brenner BM. (eds.) Hypertension: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis Management. 2nd edition. New York: Raven Press; 1995. pp: 465-78.
 
C- Book: Surnames and initials of authors, title of book, publication sequence, city of publication, publisher, publication year, related pages.
 Example:
Edelman CL, Mandle CL. Health Promotion Throughout the Life Span. 1st. ed. St.Louis: Mosby; 1998, pp:42-47.
 
D- Thesis: Surname and initial of author, thesis title, academic certificate, city of education, faculty name, university name, education year, related pages.
 Example:
 Kaplan SJ. Post – hospital home health care: the elderly access and utilization [Ph.D. dissertation], St. Louis (MO), Nursing Faculty, Washington Univ; 1995, pp: 57-61.
E- Electronic References:
 I- Electronic Journal: Surnames and initials of authors, paper title, running title of electronic journal, type of media that in this case (electronic journal) should be written [serial online], publication year and month, volume number, issue number in parentheses, [pages or screens number]. Available from: web site address. Availability date.
 Example:
 Morse SS. Factors in the emergence of infectious disease. Emerg Infect Dis [Serial online] 1995 Jan – Mor: 1(1): [24 screens]. Available from: URL: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/eid.htmscreens [cited Juns 5 1996].
 
12- The corresponding author(s) should also be mentioned.
A- Abbreviations and Symbols: Use only standard abbreviations. Avoid using them in the title and abstract. The full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use in the text unless it is a standard unit of measurement.
B- Ethical guidelines: Ethical considerations must be addressed in the Materials and Methods section. 1) Please state that informed consent was obtained from all human adult participants and from the parents or legal guardians of minors. Include the name of the appropriate institutional review board that approved the project. 2) Indicate in the text that the maintenance and care of experimental animals complies with National Institutes of Health guidelines for the humane use of laboratory animals, or those of your Institute or agency.
 
13- Conflicts of interest: Authors must acknowledge and declare any sources of funding and potential conflicting interest, such as receiving funds or fees by, or holding stocks and shares in, an organization that may profit or lose through publication of your paper. Declaring a competing interest will not lead to automatic rejection of the paper, but we would like to be made aware of it.

14- Page charges: There are no charges for publication in this Journal.
 
15- Copyright: Journal of Birjand University of Medical Sciences is an open access journal which means that all contents is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full text of the articles in this journal without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This Journal is for your personal non-commercial use. You may not modify, or re-publish any materials contained in the Journal without the prior written permission from the copyright owner. Write to the Editor for any permission inquiry.
 
16- Peer review process: All manuscripts are considered to be confidential. They are peer-reviewed by at least 3 anonymous reviewers selected by the Editorial Board. The corresponding author is notified as soon as possible of the editor decision to accept, reject, or require modifications. If the manuscript is completely acceptable according to the criteria set forth in these instructions, it is scheduled for the next available issue.

17. Author information and acknowledgments
Full names and email addresses of all authors, as well as their affiliations and institutional addresses are requested during submission. Providing the unique identifier (ORCID) of each co-author is optional, but preferred. If a collaboration group should be listed as an author, please list the group name as an author.
The authors were recommend applying the authorship principles.
In an “Acknowledgments” section, the authors are required to acknowledge anyone who contributed to the submitted work who does not meet the criteria for authorship. It is obligatory to state any support with translating or editing by third parties such as professional commercial writing/editing services. The authors should obtain permission to acknowledge from all those mentioned in the Acknowledgments section.

A. Competing interests
The authors are required to declare all financial and non-financial competing interests with regards to the publication of their work during submission. Please see our Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement for more information on competing interests. If any of the authors are unsure whether they have a competing interest, they should contact the editorial office.
B. Ethics approval and consent to participate
Authors of submissions reporting studies involving human participants, human data, or human tissues are required to provide the following information:

  • A statement on ethics approval and consent (even where the need for approval was waived).

  • The name of the ethics committee that approved the study and the committee’s reference number if appropriate.

Submissions reporting studies involving animals must include a statement on ethics approval.
If the submission does not report on or involve the use of any animals or human data or tissues, please state “Not applicable” in this section.
C. Consent to publish
If the submission contains any individual person’s data in any form, consent to publish must be obtained from that person, or in the case of children, their parent or legal guardian. All presentations of case reports must have consent to publish. The authors may use their institutional consent form. The form is not to be sent on submission, but we may request to see a copy at any stage (including after publication).

If the submission does not contain any individual person’s data, please state “Not applicable” in this section.
 
18. Finalizing submission
Before completing the process, the submitting author is required to review the submission proof. The submitting author may go back and correct any parts as necessary, review the submission proof again, and then submit the work using the “Submit” button.
 
Final Checklist
The authors must ensure that before submitting the manuscript for publication, they have taken care of the following:
1. Title page should contain title, name of the author/co-authors, their qualifications, designation and institutions they are affiliated with and mailing address for future correspondence, E-mail address, Phone and Fax number.
2. Abstract in Structured format up to 250 words.
3. References mentioned as stated in the Instruction to Authors section.
4. Tables should be typed on separate pages.
5. Make sure for Headings of Tables, their numbers and Captions of illustrations. Don’t repeat the information in tables if it is covered in the text.
6. Photographs / illustrations along with their captions.
7. Disclosure regarding source of funding and conflict of interest if any besides approval of the study from respective Ethics Committee/Institution Review Board.
8. Letter of Undertaking signed by all the authors.
