Background and Aims:  Benign acute childhood myositis (BACM) is a self-limited syndrome that often occurs following viral respiratory infections in children. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and laboratory features of children hospitalized with benign acute childhood myositis at Shahid Motaheri Hospital, Urmia, Iran, from 2016 to 2023.
Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional analytical study reviewed the medical records of 213 children with an initial diagnosis of myositis admitted to Shahid Motahari Hospital in Urmia, Iran (2016-2023). After applying inclusion criteria (age<18 years and diagnosis confirmed by a pediatric neurologist) and exclusion criteria (serious differential diagnoses or incomplete records), 170 cases were included in the final analysis. Data were extracted using a structured checklist and analyzed with SPSS (version 27).
Results: The mean age of patients was 11.04±3.1 years (range: 2–17 years), and 61.2% were male. A recent viral infection history was reported in 75.9% of cases and more than 70% of cases occurred in cold seasons. The most common symptoms were myalgia (91.8%), muscle weakness (88.8%), and gait disturbance (86.5%). Elevated creatine phosphokinase levels were the most common laboratory finding in 80% of cases (mean: 2630 IU/L, P<0.001). The mean length of hospital stay was 4.6±1.8 days, and all patients recovered without serious complications.
Conclusion: These findings align with global patterns of BACM, highlighting its predominance in school-aged boys and association with seasonal viral infections. These results may contribute to diagnosis and management in pediatric centers in Iran.
