Background and Aim: Oxidative stress and atherogenic dyslipidemia are main complications in patients with type 2 diabetes. The aim of our study is to measure and compare serum 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and malondialdehyde (MDA) biomarkers between type 2 diabetic patients and normal people. Also Atherogenic index plasma (AIP) as risk of heart disease was studied in two groups.

Materials and Methods: We were collected serum samples of 50 type 2 diabetes who were referred to Emam Reza hospital and 50 healthy subjects from ages 27–70 years who randomly selected among employee and sutdents of Birjand University of Medical Sciences. The levels of 8-OHdG and MDA were measured by ELISA and TBARS assays, respectively. Their lipid profile were evaluated by autoanalyzer and used to assay AIP index (log=(TG/HDL-Cho)). 

Results: The case and control groups were adjusted about age and gender. Sera 8-OHdG, MDA and AIP was significantly higher in diabetic group than control group (P<0.05). Although there was a significant positive correlation between MDA and AIP (r = 0.31, p < 0.05), interestingly there was no a relationship between 8-OHdG and MDA (r =0.02, p =0.91).

Conclusion: The lipid peroxidation and DNA oxidation in diabetic patients were indicated high oxidative stress in these patients, which can cause post complications such as cardiovascular disease.
