The primary determinants of success of a cardiac operation are events in the operating room. However, some patients who are seriously ill when they leave the operating room can survive and have a good long-term result when postoperative care is appropriate and intensive. Conversely, illadvised interventions early after operation can put at risk those who would otherwise convalesce normally.
